The Centre of the Earth (Traditions)

In Thompson River traditions, a stone marks the place where NLi'ksEntEm first touched the earth.

In James Teit's 1898 collection, the Spider — grandfather of NLi'ksEntEm — declares that the place where NLi'ksEntEm first touches the earth after descending from the upper world would be the centre of the earth, the centre of the Indian's country.

The Nlaka'pamux held this stone in high regard. At the time of Teit's writing, the people kept it covered with earth. The stone was said to have formed when NLi'ksEntEm rolled himself upon the ground after his descent.
