Root Digging and the Mountain Meadows

Betani Valley was a root-digging and hunting area in the mountains north of Lytton.

James Teit's 1898 collection describes Betani Valley — in the mountains north of Lytton — as an area used for root digging and hunting. The hillsides had plants the people used. It was a summer gathering place for the upper divisions of the tribe.

A 2008 historical report confirms that the community used both riverine lands and high meadows. The mountain areas were part of the seasonal pattern of land use.
