Rivers, Salmon, and Travel

Travel routes along the Thompson and Nicola rivers, from Lytton to Spences Bridge.

Published story collections from James Teit record travel routes that follow the rivers of the region. In one account, a journey goes up the Similkameen, down the Nicola, and along the Thompson River to Lytton — tracing a path that connects named places across a wide territory.

Near Spences Bridge, a figure called StEtso' is described fishing at the mouth of the Nicola River during the salmon run. The salmon run was a key seasonal event at these river locations.

Teit's collection notes that the Coyote people were especially numerous around Spences Bridge, called Nkamtci'n. This places the Spences Bridge area at the center of a rich story geography tied to the rivers.
