The name Pokaist appears in a 2011 dissertation by a Pukaist descendant, where it is described as meaning a place connected to the community's identity along the Thompson River. The same work notes that the reserve names Pokaist and Peymanoos are the names of the reserves where the author grew up, and that these names remain in use today.
Published notes from James Teit's 1898 collection record multiple named places within a few miles of Spences Bridge on the Thompson River. These include locations below, above, and very close to the bridge — recording a dense geography of named places near the bridge.
These place names appear in Teit's published ethnographic fieldwork.
