James Teit's published collection of Thompson River traditions records that the country along the Thompson River east of Lytton was Coyote people territory. They were described as especially numerous around Spences Bridge, known as Nkamtcl'n.
In one account, an old Coyote is described as having his home in a cliff very close to Spences Bridge. The landscape itself — the cliffs, the river, the bridge crossing — is part of the story geography.
